Simpler Recycling is a new legislation for businesses with over 10 employees in England, that takes effect on 31st March 2025. It has been put in place to make recycling easier and more effective in protecting the environment. At Waste Managed, we make it easy to understand so that you and your business can be prepared for the new changes in bin collections coming this year.
This law requires you to have at least these 4 bin types:
This is the same as UK households to make things ‘simpler’ to understand. However, you will still need to get dedicated bins for other waste types such as Clinical, Sharps, and Sanitary. Plus, if you produce a lot of Paper and Cardboard you can still get containers specifically for this waste type too (which often works out cheaper).
Simpler Recycling affects all types of businesses in England; including restaurants, salons, schools, charity shops, retail stores, manufacturers and everything in between. If you’re located in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, please visit our News page for all the relevant legislation updates in your area.
This will affect all English businesses with over 10 employees from 31st March 2025, and all English businesses regardless of size by 31st March 2027.
If you don’t currently have dry mixed recycling, glass recycling, or food waste collection services and rely solely on general waste collections, you’ll need to have these bins in place by 31st March 2025.
Under the new legislation, if you mix items like glass or food waste into the wrong bins, your supplier will be forced not to collect them. However, you’ll still be charged, and repeated non-compliance could result in fines or other penalties.
The UK government is expected to take strict action against those who fail to comply, as sustainability is a key focus. This law aims to significantly boost recycling rates, reduce landfill waste, and contribute to a healthier planet for future generations.
Carry out a waste audit
Assess exactly what kind of refuse your business is throwing away on a weekly basis and determine whether you need more bins (remember you need at least general, dry mixed recycling, glass, and food). Read more on how to do a waste audit in our dedicated blog.
Educate employees
Make sure all staff are informed about and trained on what’s required for Simpler Recycling so that they don’t mix waste types. Remember, if you don’t separate waste properly, your supplier will be forced not to collect your waste and will still charge for the collection regardless.
