This is a new rule for businesses in England that is designed to make recycling easier and more effective to help protect the environment. This law requires you to have at least these 3 bin types:
Dry-Mixed Recycling (which can now take Glass)
This is the same as UK households to make things ‘simpler’ to understand. However, you will still be able to get dedicated bins for other waste types such as Clinical, Sharps, and Sanitary. Plus, if you produce a lot of Glass or Paper/Cardboard you can still get containers specifically for this waste type too (which often works out cheaper).
This affects all types of businesses in England; including restaurants, salons, schools, charity shops, retail stores, warehouses and everything in between. This will affect English businesses from 31st March 2025.
How to prepare for Simpler Recycling
If you don’t currently have a recycling and food waste collection service, relying on just general waste collections, then you will need to ensure you have these bins in place before the 31st of March 2025. If you’re found to be mixing recycling or food into general waste then you can be fined or even face foreclosure.
We expect the UK government to clamp down hard on those who do not comply with the new legislation since sustainability is a big focus and this law should significantly boost recycling rates, reducing landfills, and prolonging life on our planet.
Carry out a waste audit
Assess exactly what kind of stuff your business is throwing away on a weekly basis and determine whether you need more bins (remember you need at least general, recycling, and food).
Educate employees
Make sure all staff are informed about and trained on what’s required for Simpler Recycling so that they don’t mix waste types.
